Department of Anatomy, Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte, Mangalore, India. Background: The tracheobronchial pattern of human lungs is well known. An attempt was made to compare the pattern with that of sheep lung using luminal plastination of sheep lung. Several similarities were observed between the two patterns, due to which, the sheep lung serves as an ideal experimental model to study the effect of treatment in several human airway diseases. Objective: The first objective was to compare the two tracheobronchial patterns. Moreover the study also provided an opportunity to the authors to attempt a luminal plastination. The final objective is to highlight the various advantages of advances in luminal plastination in current medical education and research. Materials and methods: Silicon sealant was injected into the tracheobroncheal tree of sheep after thoroughly cleaning the lungs with saline. After the sealant solidified the surrounding lung tissue was destroyed by boiling. Thus a luminal cast was prepared. Result: The result was a splendid luminal cast of the sheep lung showing its tracheobronchial pattern. Conclusion: It was observed that the tracheobronchial division pattern showed significant similarities and a single variation. Therefore the sheep lung is an ideal experimental model and luminal plastination can be applied to comparative anatomical study to identify more such models.

Plastination and Staining of Brain Slices Using Two Different Dehydration Methods
Introduction: Unstained formalin-fixed whole brain specimens and brain slices do not give satisfactory results for teaching neuroanatomy. In addition, difficulties in obtaining human brains for dissection have increased the demand for more durable brain specimens that have been obtained by the plastination technique. In the present study brain specimens were sliced, fixed and stained using...
متن کاملP96 Technique for Tissue Plastination in Preparing Long-Lasting Anatomical Specimens
Background: Plastination is a technique of long-term preservation of the natural tissues without the typical problems related to wet specimens. Plastinated specimens are durable, dry, and flexible. In this process, the water and fat in biological tissues are substituted by a curable polymeric resin, i.e., subsequently cured. In this study, a new unsaturated polyester resin (P96) was synthesized...
متن کاملTracheobronchial Foreign-Bodies in Children; A 7 Year Retrospective Study
Introduction: Foreign-body aspiration is still considered one of the most important diagnostic and therapeutic issues for physicians. Mortality rates and the prevalence of diseases caused by foreign bodies in the airway are higher in children because of the relatively narrow airway and immature protective mechanisms. The aim of this study was to study the pattern of foreign-body aspiration in t...
متن کاملA New Method of Brain Plastination
Introduction: Plastination is a unique technique for preservation of biological specimens used for teaching purposes. The protocol of flexible sheet plastination includes fixation, slicing, dehydration, force impregnation, casting, and curing (Hajian, Rabiei, Fatollahpour & Esfandiary, 2008). The procedure is done by using P87 flexible unsaturated polyester resin and provides heavy, gross, frag...
متن کاملReport on a Sheet Plastination Technique using Commercial Epoxy Resin
Plastination is a conservation technique which allows anatomical pieces to be preserved, dry and odor-free, for an indefinite period. In particular, plastination of sections of tissue with epoxy resin allows very thin slices to be made of various regions of the anatomy, permitting close viewing of anatomical structures which are difficult to access by dissection or cadaver exploration. The obje...
